Description
Series SCMX 801-845 were General American Transportation Co. (GATC) Type 30 ICC 103 general service (non-pressurized and uninsulated) tank cars of 8,000 gallon nominal capacity. The various tank capacities for each car are in the accompanying table. These tanks were painted a light grey with a very slight bluish tint (think light slate color) on the upper courses, dome, and ends (tank heads) while the lower course, underframe and trucks were black. The one known prototype photo is not clear enough to display which reporting marks were applied to the faces of the center sills. Both large (7”) and small (4”) are included. HO scale models were offered by Sunshine and Resin Car Works in resin, by Drake/Red Caboose in brass, and there are GATC Type 30/40 bolsters available on Shapeways. A styrene model is rumored to be in the works from Tangent, although that is speculation based upon their previous release of a three-compartment 6,000 gallon Type 30 tank car.
Series SCMX 2001-2147 were General American Transportation Co. (GATC) ICC 105A 300W insulated and pressurized tank cars of nominal capacity of 11,000 gallons for transportation of Anhydrous Ammonia. Based upon photo evidence, the tanks appear to all have been built in 1942-1943, although an indeterminate number used either Type 40 underframes (like the Type 30) or a welded underframe of ‘postwar’ GATC design. Both the Type 40 underframe and the welded underframe are kitbashing opportunities. The Type 40 could be made using the resources listed above, such as Shapeways bolsters or Tangent parts (when available). The GATC postwar welded underframe is also available from Tangent, but would need to be lengthened. The tank could be scratchbuilt or kitbashed from existing offerings.
Includes two of the artwork shown and will letter two cars.
